Cristiano Ronaldo said that he misses Manchester United, loves Real Madrid, and hopes to return to Old Trafford. Ronaldo made his statements [published in Goal and Metro] about the two clubs during a visit to Singapore.

It appears that there is divided loyalty or indecision on the part of Ronaldo. Manchester United and Real Madrid are clubs where Ronaldo left his mark in world football.

What is it about divided loyalty in a player that appears to have the world in his fingertips? The time is ripe for a brief history of Ronaldo in both clubs followed by a reflection.

Manchester United

Ronaldo signed with the Red Devils in 2003 and remained with the club until 2009. Ronaldo evolved from an unknown player to a personality while at Manchester United.

He scored 118 goals within 292 appearances with Manchester United. Ronaldo’s first achievement was when United faced Bolton four days after arriving at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo won the FIF Pro Player of the Year, FIFA World Player of the Year and Ballon D’Or Awards during his time with the Reds. Ronaldo’s contract with Manchester United was extended until 2012.

Everything appeared to be going great for Manchester United until Ronaldo expressed a desire to leave. Real Madrid signed Ronaldo after Manchester United paid Los Galactico £80m or $122m for the transaction.

Real Madrid

Ronaldo arrived at Real Madrid but managed to help Los Galacticos win La Liga, the Spanish Super Cup and Copa Del Rey. The few personal awards that Ronaldo won during his time with Real Madrid was Healthiest Player during the 2012/13 La Liga season.

Ronaldo received the Pichichi award for being La Liga’s top scorer in the 2010/11 season. Ronaldo appeared to enjoy a healthy relationship with fellow Portuguese and manager Jose Mourinho.

The days of glory for Ronaldo were marked with controversy and comparison with Lionel Messi of FC Barcelona. Ronaldo was infamous for his remarks that people perceived as arrogant.

In the beginning of 2013, Ronaldo boldly stated in an interview with the UEFA Champions League [UCL] magazine with a h/t to ESPN that Real Madrid is superior to Manchester United.  The statements were made a week before the 2012/13 UCL Round of 16 match between the two clubs.

During a 2011 UCL match between Dynamo Zagreb and Real Madrid, Ronaldo said that he was disliked because of being “rich, handsome, and a popular player". The Catalonian Spanish TV Station TV 3 filmed a satire of Ronaldo imitating the Queen and the Magic Mirror in the fairy tale Snow White with regards to this incident.

Ronaldo expressed a desire to stay ten more years in Real Madrid. When the years wore on, Ronaldo was not happy in Real Madrid.

Torn Between Two Clubs?

Ronaldo is not torn between two clubs or at least this is not my impression. He is always making these statements to attract attention to his ability to create drama.

It is this drama that generates publicity and Ronaldo knows it. Ronaldo should just go ahead and say where he wants to go and remain.

The sooner this latest Ronaldo Melodrama ends the better for humanity.
