Poland and Russia are facing the latest battle between the two nations in Warsaw. The encounters between the two nations have never been easy taking into account the historical, cultural, sports, and political rivalry between the two countries.
Poland deserves to win the Group A 2012 Euro match against Russia and win the cup for the following reasons.
I. Racist Provocation
The match has not begun and the supporters of the Russian National Football team have unfurled a racist banner against Poland inside its territory. The banner was seen in the stadium and the photo (as well as the article) was published by SI.
If this is not enough, there is the incidence of the Russian supporters assaulting four stewards during one of the matches. The Russians threw missiles at some of the Polish supporters according to a report published by FOX News.
II. Smear Campaign From the Western Press
The BBC program Panorama broadcast a documentary concerning Poland and Ukraine. While addressing issues such as racism and hooliganism, there were some footage that painted the two countries in a negative light.
The result was the West painting Poland and Ukraine as third world countries within Europe. The reality is the opposite with the Western European countries suffering from an inability to accept the rise of football in Central and Eastern Europe.
III. History
The provocations would not have been enough if it were not for the fact that Russia colonized Poland three times. The last colonization was during World War II and the Cold War.
It was a miracle that Poland survived as a nation after being colonized by Russia, Germany, and Austria. The examples of colonization was the massacres of Poles by Russian soldiers in Katyn in 1942 as well as the Holocaust in Poland by Nazi Germany.
Conclusion
After what Poland has suffered, it deserves to defeat Russia and win Euro 2012.
