The Premier League Insider with Roberto Alvarez-Galloso was at the Herballife World Football Challenge Match held at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Florida. The date was August 3 2011 and the teams were FC Barcelona and Chivas of Guadalajara.
The match was seen by 70,080 people inside the stadium establishing a new record in Florida for soccer match attendance. What was expected to be a victory by FC Barcelona over Chivas of Guadalajara turned out to be agonizing for the majority of the spectators.
The match started with a goal by Chivas of Guadalajara which was annulled by the referees. Gerard Pique (who can be appreciated in a You Tube video by Roberto Alvarez-Galloso) kicked the ball towards David Villa who scored the first goal of the match.
FC Barcelona began to make errors in the match and Chivas of Guadalajara took advantage of the situation. Chivas equalized and scored three more points before a stunned crowd.
The only exception were the fans of Chivas of Guadalajara who were singing traditional and contemporary songs. The celebrations lasted until very early in the morning.
Chivas of Guadalajara won its first match in the Herbalife World Football Challenge after defeats to the Italian Football (Soccer) Club Juventus and the Spanish Club Real Madrid.
How could FC Barcelona (UEFA Chanpions League and Spanish Football League 2010-2011 winner) allow itself to lose? How could a team with the presence of Gerard Pique, Xavi Hernandez, and David Villa (and coach Pep Guardiola) permit such a humilliation.
It hurts to say this (coming from an FC Barcelona supporter) but Barca rested on its laurels. Barca should have done what it does best in Europe.
It is hoped that FC Barcelona is able to learn from its mistakes when it faces Club America.
