FC Steaua Bucuresti defeats Chelsea FC in the first leg of the Round of 16 UEFA Europa League. This was the first time both teams faced each other and Chelsea did not look like the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League winners.
The Premier League Insider would like to extend its congratulations to FC Steaua Bucuresti, its supporters, coach, and manager Gigi Becali. FC Steaua Bucuresti played well with Raul Rusescu being predominant in the match.
Rusescu was able to capitalize on the weakness and disorganization inherent in Chelsea’s defense. Rusescu was able to score on the basis of a penalty after Ryan Bertrand conceded it.
Chelsea was not inspiring, lacked concentration, and coordination. John Obi Mikel and Fernando Torres were notable in their inability to make significant inroads in the match.
It appeared that Chelsea was thinking of the internal struggles between Rafa Benitez their manager and its supporters. The other possibility may be the demoralization of the team after so many changes in managers and losses.
The only advantage that Chelsea may have in order to save itself is at home. The second leg is expected to take place at Stamford Bridge.
It is doubtful that even a home advantage could help the Blue Nation. The rants against Benitez, the pressure of its owner Roman Abramovich, and the players not focusing may be Chelsea’s undoing.
It is only hoped that Chelsea is able to get its act together in order to face FC Steaua Bucuresti. If Chelsea is unable or unwilling to do so, the alternative will be a downward spiral for the club.
The most valuable player of the match was Raul Rusescu. The worst players of the match were Fernando Torres and Ryan Bertrand.
