I watched the match on FOX Soccer TV.
Manchester United and Real Madrid faced each other in the second leg of the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League. The venue was celebrated on March 7, 2013 at Old Trafford.
Cristiano Ronaldo received a warm welcome from his former club before the match started. While Manchester United had the home advantage, there were problems for the club in the first half.
Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic attempted to score a header yet it went off the post. It did not help United that Wayne Rooney was dropped in favor of Nani for this match.
This was one mistake that Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson must be regretting. The second major mistake was allowing Tom Cleverly to participate in this crucial match for Manchester United.
At the same time, Real Madrid attempted to create problems for the club. Real Madrid managed to maintain possession in the majority of the first half.
They managed to capitalize on the inexperience of Cleverly. Real Madrid even played counterattack to a Manchester United that appeared cornered.
In spite of possession of the ball, Real Madrid was unable to capitalize on possible goals in the first half. Ronaldo’s attempted goal with a free kick crashed against the goal post wall.
At the same time, Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho feared that Real Madrid was conceding too much time to Manchester United. It did not help Real Madrid that Iker Casillas was absent from this match.
The first half ended with no goals scored by either team. The second half was a different story.
Real Madrid Defender Sergio Ramos started the second half by scoring an own goal. This is the same as dropping the Copa Del Rey trophy two years ago after Real Madrid won it.
Ramos did not deserve the blame since fellow defender Raphael Varane was terrible. Nani simply took advantage of what transpired and the rest worked to the advantage of Manchester United.
When things appeared to improve for Manchester United, Nani received a red card from a referee. According to the referee, Nani kicked Real Madrid Alvaro Arbeloa in the chest.
After looking at the footage transmitted by FOX Soccer, the kick was not intentional. The referee did not see it that way unfortunately.
Midfielder Luka Modric added insult to injury by scoring an equalizer for Real Madrid. Cristiano Ronaldo scored the second goal for Manchester United almost immediately.
Finally, Ferguson realized the mistake he made with Cleverly. Wayne Rooney was called to salvage what was left of the UEFA Champions League match for Manchester United.
Everything appeared to be down to the last minute with Young substituting for Welbeck. At the same time, Real Madrid stalled for time as the clock kept ticking.
Manchester United 1-2 Real Madrid
THE RESULTS OF THE MATCH WERE AFFECTED BY THE REFEREE'S DECISION AGAINST NANI. THE REFEREE RUINED EVERYTHING FOR MANCHESTER UNITED AT OLD TRAFFORD.
