The official Manchester United webpage reveals a confident Louis Van Gaal with a caption heralding a new era. Unfortunately, the Red Devils were defeated by Swansea City during the first 2014/15 Premier League [EPL] season match.
They managed to survive with a draw against Sunderland in their second. The next two matches will be against MK Dons in the Capital One Cup and Burnley.
At the present rate, the EPL table shows Manchester United in 13th place with one point and a minus one goal differential. Old Trafford is below Sunderland, Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Swansea City and five teams above the relegation zone.
This is not the new era that was expected when Van Gaal took over from David Moyes last spring. The Dutch manager is attempting to turn around a club that lost prestige in the last EPL season.
He is using a 3-5-2 formation that was successful in other clubs but will take time to consolidate at Old Trafford. There were suggestions by the manager about Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck deemed surplus and leaving.
The recent signing of Argentine Defender Marcos Rojo and winger Angel Di Maria joining the club may help. On the other hand, this does not address the issue since Rojo will likely miss the MK Dons match. The reasons are related to issues with his work permit.
At the same time and article published in The Daily Mail reports that Robin Van Persie is confident of an Old Trafford comeback. It takes a great leap of faith and winning every match for a comeback.
What is necessary is that Van Gaal show players like Welbeck the exit door and sign others. There should be pressure on the Glazer family to allow Van Gaal autonomy to operate in Old Trafford.
Van Gaal knows the terrain and the rules pertaining to UEFA better than Glazers. The only interest that the Glazers have is money, money, and money. It is their money that ruined Manchester United and placed it in its present state.
What is also necessary is that the teams work in spirit and unity with Van Gaal. This resulted in their victory in the Guiness International Champions Cup. If this is not forthcoming in the weeks and months ahead, Manchester United may look forward to relegation in the Championship instead of UEFA and The Premier League.
