The United States Men’s National Team [USMNT] will face Honduras for a second time in their 2014 World Cup Qualifiers [WCQ]. The match will be celebrated at Rio Tinto Stadium at Sandy, Utah tonight.
The first encounter at the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano in the Central American country was a disaster for the USMNT. Honduras scored two goals and the USMNT lost their first match for the WCQ last February.
What has transpired since then for the two countries?
It appeared that the USMNT would not qualify for the World Cup after the initial defeat. There was talk of internal fighting within the USMNT and against Jurgen Klinsmann.
The match between Costa Rica and USMNT on a snowy Denver night changed that perception. The world was treated to a united USMNT battling the heavy snow to score one goal towards victory.
The goal less draw against Mexico followed by a defeat in a friendly by Belgium raised doubts. The doubts were finally erased with victories against Germany [friendly], Jamaica, and Panama thanks to Jozy Altidore.
We can expect to see Altidore alongside with Graham Zusi, Matt Bessler, Tim Howard, and Omar Gonzalez in the lineup. The only problem would be the suspension of De Marcus Beasley
The USMNT appears to enjoy a hometown advantage and is currently in first place with 10 points. Another victory will place the United States closer to classifying for the World Cup.
Honduras began the Hexagonal with great promise after its victory in the opening match. Afterwards, the country’s National team began to flounder in its quest for World Cup glory.
Honduras match against Mexico resulted in a draw while the matches against Panama and Costa Rica were losses. The team experienced internal problems with their players.
The Honduran forward Jerry Bengstom was asked to leave the National Team after going AWOL for a New England Revolution match. Victor Bermudez [Defender] and Luis Garrido [Midfield] are under suspension.
Maynor Figueroa and Boniek Garcia are among the injured in the team. The possibility exists that the USMNT may face a weakened Honduran National Team.
Honduras is currently in fourth place in the Hexagonal with seven points. A surprise win may place the Central American country back in contention.
While the USMNT have the advantage, there should be no underestimation of the opponent. This is expected to be a fierce and prolonged battle between the two CONCACAF teams.
It is expected that maybe the match will end with Altidore scoring three goals. One would be in the beginning while the last two will be in 90 minutes.
Honduras may score two goals within the end of the first half with the following results.
USMNT 3-2 Honduras
